Innovative digital tool developed to strengthen cervical cancer prevention
Published on Jan 20, 2024

In Uruguay, cervical cancer represents a significant public health challenge, ranking fifth in cancer-related deaths among women and fourth in incidence, with an average of 313 new cases per year. Although with proper prevention measures this cancer could be eliminated in the country, a significant percentage of girls and women do not follow the prevention recommendations, exposing them to the risk of developing the disease.
To address this issue, a project has been launched to develop an innovative technological tool aimed at drastically reducing the incidence of this type of cancer and even eradicating it in the future. In this regard, the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII) has awarded the project to private companies DigitalProjex, ATGen, and ThalesLab, in collaboration with the Honorary Fight Against Cancer Commission, the Ministry of Public Health, and the State Health Services Administration (ASSE).
The proposed tool, called HPVuy, consists of a web application that will serve as a permanent guide for users, providing detailed information about cervical cancer and its prevention. Its goal is to ensure that all women have access to prevention measures by sending notifications and reminders related to each stage of the prevention or treatment process.
This application will enable greater adherence and access for women to the different stages of prevention, including HPV vaccination, screening, and the study and treatment of detected lesions. Additionally, it will offer features such as tracking completed or pending vaccinations and screenings, sending reminders, tracing consultations or tests, identifying consulted professionals, and suggesting the next steps within the health system.
The main objective of this initiative is to reach the most vulnerable populations, especially those attended through public services via ASSE, with the aim of progressively advancing toward the goals set by the World Health Organization for 2030. It is expected that, with the implementation of this tool, there will be greater effectiveness in preventing and treating cervical cancer, thereby improving women's health in Uruguay.
